The founders of Awana derived the name from the first letters of "Approved workmen are not ashamed" as taken from 2 Timothy 2:15.

History of Truth & Training

The Awana program, founded in 1941 by Lance Latham and Art Rorheim at North Side Gospel Center in Chicago, introduced Truth & Training (T&T) to engage third- through sixth-graders. Launched as part of Awana’s formalization in 1950, T&T was designed to answer children’s questions about God and guide them in faith during a pivotal stage.

With Awana’s growth to over 61,000 churches worldwide, T&T has become a key program, split into Ultimate Adventure (grades 3–4) and Ultimate Challenge (grades 5–6). Its curriculum fosters biblical understanding through Scripture memory and interactive lessons.
